In the 1930s, survival rates for triplets were very slim, which made it an even more momentous occasion for Britain’s oldest surviving triplets to be celebrating their 80th birthday on Saturday.
Their mother, Mabel Bloxham was expecting just one child and received rather a large shock when she gave birth to triplets.
Mary Bloxham, Margaret Coleman and Georgina Leech were born in her bedroom in Birmingham on May 20, 1937.

To make sure they’d be able to tell the sisters apart, a piece of coloured wool was wrapped around the wrist of each baby, pink for Mary, green for Margaret and yellow for Georgina.
Metro reports that since that day, these have remained the women’s signature colours, with their mother making them clothes which included each of those colours.

“When my mum asked the doctor, he said he thought there was two of us, possibly three.
“My mum asked him why he wouldn’t tell her that and he said there was no point because it would have only made her scared.”
The nice thing about growing up with siblings is that there is always someone to play with – in theory.
Mary said, “We always had company and friends and if one of us was playing with a toy, the others wanted it.
“I was born first, Margaret was next, and Georgina was last.
“The nurse didn’t have anything paper to write this on, so she found a matchbox and wrote it on that.
