Caroline Onwura, A Feminist Symbol From Anambra State
Nigeria-based Emmanuel Achusim is an 18-year-old fine art and documentary photographer whose latest portrait series, Caro, is a visual ode to a feminist icon in a small village in Nigeria: Caroline Onwura, a native of Atani, a village in Anambra state, Nigeria. On his Tumblr, Emmanuel said about the series:
“Born in the 50s and still living, Caroline continues to be a woman of strength.
At the child bearing stage of her life, Caro was said have gone through the pain of child delivery alone and by herself.
While the woman in the portrait is not Caroline, the model is meant to embody her spirit – and speaking on this, Achusim said:
“Caro is admired for her daring spirit and her
bold approach to life issues. Being the second daughter of a polygamous
home, often times she was thought to be the first child of her family
because of her bold nature. At her youthful age, Caro was admired for her good sense of fashion and style.
She was special, even the Dibia (witch doctor) once testified
that she had been specially blessed by the gods with a strength that
mere humans didn’t posses – that she came from a world where she was
best everything.”
Rumour has it that on the same day she conceived one of her
children she was seen at the market place shopping for her groceries.”
“Till date, Caro remains an icon and an
inspiration to the Atani community and most importantly to the many
women that have come to know her. She is a true definition of a ‘woman of virtue’.
She remain a testimony to the belief that women were created strong and would survive independence.”
